Education Space
Education Ministry – The Education Ministry at St Luke’s is constrained by lack of space. Several Sunday School Classes are at or beyond their capacity, and with all rooms in use each Sunday; there is no room to add more classes.
Additionally, the youth program is also limited by the lack of an adequately sized assembly/activity area.
The Pre-School classrooms cannot accommodate the growing demand, and they lack the facilities such as restrooms between classrooms and proper storage which would be required for eventual accreditation. Depending how the current space at St. Luke’s is utilized, there could be a need for up to 10 more classrooms, 3 children’s restrooms, a dedicated storage area, and a youth activity area. Details of this 7600 square feet of additional Christian Education Space are provided below:
- 6 Pre-School classrooms equipped with low tables and chairs are needed. Each classroom should have at least 600 square feet with about 2/3’s of the space carpeted wall to wall, and the remainder bare floor (for water activities, painting, etc). Each classroom needs a sink. Each pair of classrooms should be connected by a bathroom with child sized sink and toilet. Each classroom should have low cabinets on at least one wall at the children’s height with lockable storage cabinets above. There should be one tall lockable cabinet, and a space for child-sized cabinets with space to hang coats and book bags. There should be lots of windows low enough to the floor so the children can see out with ease (probably about 24” from floor). To the extent possible, these rooms should also be useable for adult activities.
- Indoor Storage space centrally located to the pre-school classrooms should have shelves for bins of teaching materials and other supplies. A large, walk-in closet or long narrow room would work for this, and could be shared with Christian Education.
- A youth activities space of 1200 square feet is needed (Could be a subdivision of the fellowship hall) to provide open space for activities, and be readily convertible to tables and chair for classroom use.
- Four adult classrooms of 600 square feet each, equipped with A/V connections, a white board, folding chairs, and small tables.
- If new construction consumes the existing playground area, a new fenced playground of at least 3000 square feet needs to have a flat protective surface, and be at least 50% shaded. It should be easily accessible from the new classrooms. Equipment would include a climbing apparatus large enough to accommodate at least 24 children at a time, 4-6 swings, a sand box (at least 12x12 with cover) and 180 sq feet for storage of other outdoor toys (playhouses, etc.) Ground surfaces under equipment should be covered with mulch or other suitable fall zone materials such as rubber, pea gravel, etc.
